When To Find A Lender
At an early point in the house hunting process, sit down with a lender. "Interview" him or her about the process and how he'd work with you. Ask how large a mortgage you'd qualify for and what the payments would be under various scenarios. If the person tries to steer you into doing something that makes you uncomfortable, find another lender. If the person is logical and helps you sort through the options open to you, and encourages you to weigh the pros and cons of each, stick with them. Ask them to go through the process (credit check, etc.) to get you qualified for a loan. That way, you'll only look at homes you could buy and can spend your time much more productively.
