A home is generally a good investment over the long run, but committing to a monthly payment for the next 30 years is a big commitment. How much will you have to sink into a home to keep it in good shape for 30 years? A lot. A better approach is to buy a less expensive home with a 15 year mortgage. You gain equity much faster and the home should require less expensive upkeep over the short time period.
