Ending PMI Payments
You must by PMI, or private mortgage insurance, if you pay less than 20 percent down on your home purchase. The PMI must be maintained until you eventually come up with 20 percent equity. At this point, you should affirmatively contact the lender to terminate the PMI. You are no longer required to have it, but lenders often “forget” to terminate it or tell you.
